Don’t become an Ostrich!
At 8 feet tall and 300 lbs, the ostrich is arguably the largest bird on the planet. It is also one of the fastest, so what predators it cannot knock to the ground with the force its mighty kicks or slice open with its razor sharp toe claws, this behemoth can probably outrun, reaching speeds of up to 45 mph. However, this seemingly invincible bird is best known for the infamous behavior it exhibits when threatened:
It buries its head in the sand.
Are you like the ostrich, amazingly well-equipped with all that you need to start, grow and succeed in your own venture… but with your head buried in the sand?
Starting your own business can seem scary at first, especially when every TV and radio station is blaring bad news about the economy. When faced with a crisis, your first impulse might be to hunker down, stay below the radar and keep working at a job that offers financial security until the clouds begin to clear (the equivalent of “burying your head in the sand”). But is following that impulse really going to help you in the long run? Has following that impulse given you the freedom and financial stability you deserve? Probably not.
The key to succeeding in business, and in life, is somewhat counterintuitive. You must strive to see the opportunities presented in every situation and go against what most people do. When other people are just staying the course or “hunkering down”, that is when you must forge YOUR plan for success. So one of the best times to go into business for yourself is actually during a down economy. You have less competition, and when the economy turns your business will be well established! We’ve all seen in the last year or so that the “security” offered by conventional employment is, to a large degree, an illusion. Going to work for yourself doesn’t seem as risky today as it did in 2006, does it? When you work for yourself, you have direct control over your income and your outcomes — there are no backroom negotiations with your job on the line! Working for yourself gives you increased security, freedom and most importantly to many parents - the ability to make a living while staying involved with your home life.
